International campaign against the killing of more than 28.500 goats in the Mallorca mountainsCampaña internacional contra la matanza de más de 28.000 cabras en las montañas de MallorcaInternationale Kampagne gegen den Abschuss von über 28.500 Ziegen auf Mallorcasupported by:
In the mountains of Mallorca live semi-wild goats. It is a domesticated breed, imported by the first settlers, which developed into an independent species and forms part of Mallorca's heritage. However the Balearic government now claim that it is a threat to the environment. The announcement by the General Director of the Governmental Department for Hunting and the Protection of Species of the Baleares Islands to pass a law which will allow the massive killing of goats with firearms in the mountains in the north of Mallorca (Tratamontana and the Península de Artà). This and has alerted several animal rights groups from Spain, Germany and England. We disagree completely with this kind of control mechanism, which we consider brutal. We ask for a humane way of reducing the goat's numbers. Shooting trophies? The Baleares government intends to create a shooting programme for this massive killing of 28.500 goats in the Tramontana Y Artà, promoting it as big game hunting. This is ridiculous, because the majority are nanny-goats and not billy-goats so that the number of heads that would qualify as trophies would be minimal. The majority are simply half-wild domesticated nanny-goats. For this reason the big game shooting plan is absurd. Humane methods As this is intended to control the goat population, there are methods like the following, which do not wipe out the animals with firearms: Sterilization darts In Fire Island (New York) and other parts of the USA, several sterilization programmes for deer with injections from an darting gun showed exciting results. The so-called PZP (Porcine Zona Pellucida) results in 90 % of the animals being sterile. Its effects are: - the effects are reversible Anaesthetic darts Another humane and morally acceptable method of control is the use of anaesthetic darts, instead of bullets that kill, in order to catch the goats. The anaesthetic darts would be administered by trained personnel of the Consellería del Medio Ambiente (Department for the Environment). The method of capturing the animals would not be violent. They could be released into other places where they would not pose a threat to the environment. No to the hunters We strongly object that hunters carry out this work, because they don't care for the animals and would kill to get their so-called trophies.
