Calling for a boycott of "Pimentón de la Vera"*

(español, français, deutsch: click here)

Reason for the campaign

Each year a donkey is physically and psychologically abused in a festival in Villanueva de la Vera, in the Spanish province of Extremadura. During the "Pero Palo" Fiesta on Shrove Tuesday the animal is jostled and dragged through the village by a partially drunken crowd. He is exposed to gunshots near to his head and firecrackers, and due to the stress involved, the donkey sweats heavily and collapses a number of times.

National and International Animal rights activists have opposed this event for many years. In 1987 Vicki Moore, co-founder with her husband of Fight Against Animal Cruelty in Europe (FAACE), made international headlines when she saved Blackie the Donkey from death in the village.

Because of a recent animal protection law, the villagers should no longer be able to abuse the donkey. However, nothing much has changed and the animal still suffers.

Video material taken in 2003 by FAACE and IAC, showing the rough treatment of the donkey, was presented by the Asociación Nacional para la Protección y el Bienestar de los Animales (ANPBA, Madrid) to the Guardia Civil y the government of Extremadura, but this has been disregarded. ANPBA has even questioned the proper procedures of the investigation, but the people in charge are simply not willing to make changes.

The Product

Therefore we are calling for an international boycott of a product of the region: "Pimenton de la Vera". It is a spice consisting of smoked pepper powder and produced by several villages in the "de la Vera" region. It is exported to many countries and also sold via the Internet.

We ask you not to buy this product and tell your dealer (internet mail order shops as well), that you will boycott "Pimenton de la Vera" as long as a live animal is used in the fiesta.

If you happen to travel in the area, please don't buy it. The brand from Villanueva de la Vera is sold under the name "Gualtaminos" to tourists in gift shops.
