Good News - Bullfighting banned in Catalonia
28/07/2010

We are delighted that the Catalan parliament has voted by a good majority to ban bullfighting in the Catalan region of Spain as of 1st January 2010. It was a good vote of 68 for the ban and 55 against it with 9 abstentions.

Fight Against Animal Cruelty in Europe (FAACE) has been fighting against bullfighting, especially in the Catalan region, since 1987.

Says Tony Moore, Chairman of FAACE: "In 1988 Vicki and I persuaded mayor Telm Zaragosa to declare Tossa de Mar, in Cataluna to become the first anti bullfighting town in Spain. It is wonderful to know that from this small beginning such a great advance has been made.

This is just one region, albeit a large one, in Spain to ban bullfighting, but it is the beginning of the end for this public torturing and killing of the bulls."

Co-founder of FAACE Vicki Moore worked and even gave her life for the end of bullfighting and the attendant cruelties of the Blood Fiestas.

Grand National Press Challenge
27/03/2008

A demonstration will take place on Thursday 3rd April 2006 at 12.00 to 14.00 opposite the main entrance to the Aintree Racecourse on the A59 in front of the Aintree railway station entrance.

FIGHT AGAINST ANIMAL CRUELTY in EUROPE (FAACE) has again joined forces with ANIMAL AID to protest against the cruelty of the 'National' and horse racing in general. Last year a faller in the Grand National, Graphic Approach, died one month later as a result of injuries he sustained. The immediate visible wounds were concussion and a black eye, however after a month of suffering at the Liverpool Veterinary School, Leahurst, he succumbed to pneumonia. Two others horses, Lord Rodney and Into the Shadows, died during the same three day meeting. This makes 35 horses that have died at Aintree over the last 10yearsYet another horse Whispered Promises was killed at the Cheltenham Festival on the 14th March two weeks ago. Since then another three horses have been destroyed at race meetings making a total of 165 horses killed as a result of racing accidents on our racetracks during the last 12 months.

Tony Moore, FAACE chairman: "I appeal to the press to take the time to come and see and talk to us and not show bias by one-sided reporting of this 'deadly' event! We are only a few steps away from the entrance and will be there from 12 noon.

"In England nearly 400 horses are killed in the racing industry annually. Because the intention is not to kill horses and that this is only a 'by-product' of racing doesn't make it right. As a 'by-product' of bullfighting 200 horses die annually in the bullrings of Spain. This causes horror in the minds of right thinking people and yet we choose to ignore the death of the racehorses.

"When horses are injured they are killed, not only because they cannot be saved, but because their racing life is over and they are have no further value. It is better business to collect the insurance.

"If the owners and trainers were motivated by feelings of humanity instead of profit their horses wouldn't be near a race track. It would be asking the impossible for that to happen, but it just seems so very hypocritical when they say that the most important thing is that their horses come back safe and sound."

Bullfighting Exhibition in EU-Parliament makes blood boil
23/02/2008

A bullfighting exhibition scheduled in the European Parliament in Brussels on the 4th and 5th June 2008 has caused an outcry among animal lovers all over Europe. They have contacted their respective MEPs and asked them to intervene to prevent this event, which will promote extreme cruelty to animals. Should it take place, a pan-European demo may be staged.

Well-known bullfighters to attend
Organizer of the event is MEP Luis dse Grandes, MEP for Spain's Partido Popular. Each Euro deputee is entitled to hold a presentation once a year. Together with Spain's most important bull breeder, Eduardo Miura, he intends to sell the blood soaked bullfight to his fellow MEPs by means of a multi media show and personal appearances of famous matadors like Enrique Ponce and El Julí.

The organizers are aware that the exhibition will take place in a hostile atmosphere, because in recent years the Euro Deputees repeatedly tried to get rid of the corrida. Only in January 2007 an impressive over 25% of the MEPs tried to get bullfighting banned with a written declaration within the EU (211 of 785 deputees).

Tony Moore, Chairman of the British charity Fight Against Animal Cruelty in Europe (FAACE) together with his late wife Vicki Moore, has repeatedly given speaches on bullfighting and blood fiestas at the "Eurogroup for Animals" meetings in Strasbourg. Vicki's testimony was even more powerful, as although she had been gored eleven times and almost killed by a Spanish fighting bull she still continued her fight for the animals.

17 million pounds blood money subsidy
Tony remembers well the shocked reactions of the MEPs not only about the extent of the suffering of the bulls, but about the fact that the European taxpayer still foots the bill for this cruel spectacle. In Spain alone 70,000 heads of cattle are tortured and killed either in the bullrings or in blood fiestas. Apparently the approximately 1,200 Spanish bull breeders annually receive 17 million British Pounds out of the taxpayers' pockets. Even after the reform of the Common Agricultural Policy there has been very
little change.

Bullfighting in crisis
However, other developments catapulted the bullfighting sector into a severe crises. BSE and Blue Tongue have had severe effecty on the industry. Current opinion polls prove that the Spanish general public is no longer interested in the blood thirsty spectacle. Most of the arena remain empty. In Spain and France 45 towns declared themselves as "anti-bullfighting areas". Some bullrings were demolished. Together with Spanish groups FAACE had success in that the Spanish state owned RTVE no longer transmits bullfights. Other stations have to transmit a parental guidance in advance, warning that the
programme is not suitable for children.

The Spanish state wants to move away from the image of the cruel corrida. In the past it was protected by former agricultural minister Arias Cañete, married to a member of the bull breeder family Domecq, but the protection of corrida is no longer a part of the current manifesto of the socialist party PSOE in the upcoming elections on the 9th March.

Animal rights people don't consider bullfighting a fair fight between two even opponents, but as a spectacle, in which massive manipulations are carried out for the benefit of the matador. An increasing number of Spanish vets speaks out against the spectacle. Dr. Albert Sordé of the Colegio Oficial de Veterinarios de Barcelona in a speech in Brussels said, that due to their nervous systems bulls suffer the same as humans. There is no scientific reason to deny their suffering.

Vets, who work in the bullrings also say, that is is almost impossible to keep alive a bull, which was "pardoned". At the time of the pardon being declared the animal is so severely injured, that only high-tech medicines can deliver the necessary miracle. Of course the case of a "pardoning" is quite rare.

Tony Moore, Chairman of Fight Against Animal Cruelty in Europe (FAACE): "We consider this bullfighting exhibition as one of the final death throes. We urge the EU deputees to intervene to prevent the event from happening. Should it take place, we will demonstrate in front of the building and show our own
anti-bullfighting video. This will finish off the myth of the corrida. The aficionados should think twice and consider whether they want to risk an own goal."

Don't bend over backwards Beckham! And don't go the cowboy way
24/07/2007

Tony Moore, Chairman of Fight Against Animal Cruelty in Europe (FAACE) has written to David and Victoria Beckham begging them not to attend a rodeo.

Tony Moore says:
"The rodeo cowboys love to get high profile personalities to go for the wannaby cowboy style and get them to attend rodeos."

"The Beckhams seem to be bending over backwards and to be prepared to do anything to please the Americans at the moment."

"The rodeo cowboys would like nothing better than to get Becks to appear to support their so called sport by attending a rodeo."

"If David and or Victoria Beckham were to appear to support rodeo, our work, as well as that of the American anti-rodeo group SHARK, would be set back years."

"Most people don't know the truth behind the hype of the 'brave cowboy' taming a 'wild animal'."

The animals used, horses, bulls and baby calves, used in rodeo are ordinary farm animals that are made to appear wild by a number of 'Tricks'.

Some of these are:

1) The use of flankstraps, which are fastened around the horses in front of their hind legs and at the moment of release from the chute are pulled tight. This makes the animal buck. In the case of bulls it puts pressure on the urethra.

2) Spurs that are dug into their necks and flanks.

3) Electric shockers are especially prevalent in the USA. These high voltage shockers are applied to the horse or bull on the neck head or body as they leave the chute.

As a result of the abuse of the rodeo on the animals, many injuries occur, broken bones, contusions, concussions, skin-abrasions and internal bleeding are quite common. Some injuries can result in an animal's death. Some disciplines can cause broken necks and spines.

Don't bet on horses lives, bet on cards or the lottery - Grand National Protest
10/04/2007

FAACE organises protest against the cruelty of the 'National' and horse racing in general.

The demonstration will take place on Thursday the 12th of April 2007 at 12 am opposite the main entrance to the Aintree Racecourse on the A59. This is in front of the Aintree railway station entrance.

Tony Moore, FAACE chairman:
"It is sad that horses have to die in our pursuit of pleasure, we should have reached the point where betting on a race where they are very likely to die is unacceptable."

"If you watch the 'National' on television the cameras quickly turn away when a horse falls, in case our sensibilities are offended. You don't get to see the screen that is erected around the horse to hide the bitter truth of the death of a horse."

"We should think very seriously before we help to pass a death sentence on these horses for gain or a thrill."

Make Firework Law Work
15/10/2006

Fireworks are legally on sale from Monday the 16th of October 2006.

Fight Against Animal Cruelty in Europe (FAACE) has appealed to the Chief Constable of Merseyside Bernhard Hogan-Howe and John Reid - Home Secretary, to run a high profile campaign to make sure that
fireworks are not set off at anti social times.

The first year, 2004, that the new law on the sale and use of fireworks came into effect it did seem to make a big difference.

Last year the situation had deteriorated, the hours that fireworks can be set off were not being adhered to. Neighbours and pets were being terrorised until the early hours of the morning.

It is illegal to set off fireworks between the hours of 11pm and 7am.

There are exceptions:
November 5th until 1am the following day
New years eve until 1am the following day
Chinese year until 1am the following day
Diwali until 1am the following day

Says Tony Moore, Chairman, FAACE:
"When strict time limits are imposed pet owners at least have the chance to make some preparations for the protection and care of their pets. Whatever the date dogs still need to be walked. It would be better if fireworks were restricted to publicly organised events."

Demonstration Against the Aintree Grand National
- Get rid of the Aintree Grand National -

27/03/06

FAACE has joined forces with Animal Aid to protest against the cruelty of the 'National' and horse racing in general.

A demonstration will take place on Thursday 6th April 2006 at 12 am opposite the main entrance to the Aintree Racecourse on the A59.

Tony Moore, FAACE chairman:
"Appealing to the baser instincts of man, a lack of care for other creatures in the pursuit of pleasure and gambling, the Grand National and The Waterloo Cup were both started by the same man William Lynn in the late 19th century."

"Now that the Waterloo Cup hare coursing has been put into the dustbin of history, it is time to remove that other animal cruelty spectacle, the Aintree Grand National."

"When the unthinking punters have a "little flutter" on the National they should bear in mind that the heart of the horse they back may have its final flutter on the racecourse."

"At Cheltenham this March, 9 horses were killed at this high profile meeting. This caused a sudden shock to many members of the public."

"On the racetracks of England up to nearly 400 horses are killed annually and we turn a blind eye to this."

"If only a fraction of this number of jockeys were killed the National and with it all national hunt meetings would be stopped immediately."

"When horses are injured they are killed, not only because they cannot be saved, but because their racing life is over and they are have no further value. It is better business to collect the insurance."

Blood, Sand and Cowboy Sweat
Brits say "no" to rodeo in the Mallorca bullring

01/04/06

The Fight Against Animal Cruelty in Europe (FAACE) is spearheading a
campaign against a rodeo, which is planned to take place in the Palma,
Mallorca bullring, from the 22nd to the 24th of September, as part of a
western riding festival called '1. Mallorca Trophy'

The bullring in Mallorca is still in use and many bulls are tortured to
death there every year. Even though the bloodstains in the sand will be
covered up for the event, the building itself will still remind the
spectator of its sinister purpose. This event will contribute to the very
existence of the bullring and consequently to bullfighting as a whole.

Rodeo has been called "the American answer to bullfighting", although until
now they have tried to distance themselves from it. Now the Wannabe-Cowboys
will actually help with bullring finances!

The participants will be US Army personnel as well as North American
Civilians, who work and live in Europe plus European citizens. During the
rodeo season they dress up as cowboys and make believe they are in the Wild
West.

Cruelty of the rodeo
It is a well-known fact, that rodeo is extremely cruel to the animals. They
are domesticated and are constantly transported from one rodeo to another.

They only behave as if they are wild when the following means of coercion
are applied: The so-called flank strap is tied around the horse's or bull's
abdomen, which in general is a very sensitive part of the body - no matter
whether the animal is castrated or not or even when it is a mare. In the
case of the bulls, the flank strap puts pressure on the urethra. When the
animal enters the ring the flank strap is pulled tight, which makes the
animal buck. As soon as the flank strap is taken off the animal stops
bucking. Sometimes they jump forward so hard that they fall and hit the
metal barriers.

Spurs are always used as an additional means of inflicting pain. The spurs
are struck at the horse's neck and shoulder and the belly of the bulls.

The Campaign
FAACE has sent a veterinary report on rodeo issued by the German Veterinary
Association for the Protection of Animals - Tierärztliche Vereinigung für
Tierschutz e.V.- to the Mallorca authorities.

The veterinary experts and ethnologists, who monitored rodeos carried out in
Germany by the very same cowboys, came to the conclusion that the means of
coercion like the flank strap and the spurs, as well as the Wild Horse Race
and the bull riding should be banned. They also criticised night rodeos,
because the blinding light interferes with the vision and the behaviour of
the animals.

FAACE has worked against rodeo in Europe for several years and has sent
video material for use in this report.

FAACE also asks British tour operator not to promote the event. The group
fear that through massive publicity in the Mallorca hotels where most Brits
stay, holiday makers will be lured into the bullring and thus inadvertently,
will not only support the rodeo but the bullring as well.

Tony Moore, Chairman of FAACE, says:
"For the wannabe-cowboys not only to give bullfighting the 'seal of
approval', but to put money into the bullring coffers is disgusting. This
aberration must be stopped. We will call for a British tourism boycott,
should the Mallorca authorities give the go-ahead for this cowardly event."

Cruelty Tourism - The Irish Connection
03/01/06

The last Waterloo Cup hare coursing event was held at Altcar near Formby, in February 2005. Hare coursers who would have been in the Waterloo cup this year, 2006, are to compete in Kilkenny on January 13/14/15.

Hare coursing was outlawed in England and Wales by the 2004 Hunting Act, but is still legal in Ireland although independent polls show that 80 percent of the population north and south of the border want it banned.

The Fight Against Animal Cruelty in Europe (FAACE) has joined forces with the Irish Campaign Against Blood Sports (ICABS) and German organisation Animal 2000, to expose this sick cruelty tourism.

Demonstration at 12 noon on Saturday the 14th of January 2006
FAACE, ICABS and Animal 2000 are planning a peaceful protest at the Seamus Hughes International tournament in Sevenhouses, Co Kilkenny, demonstrating against this sinister and worrying trend of cruelty tourism.

FAACE had organised demonstrations against the Waterloo Cup since the late 1980s

Tony Moore, FAACE Chairman
"Of course, this is not the Waterloo Cup under a different name, but we feel it is our duty to join forces with ICABS and Animal 2000 and be there for the hares."
"Ireland doesn't need the problems that these coursers bring."
"UK hare coursers should bite the bullet and accept that their coursing days are over."
"The hares in Ireland are in decline and this shows how false the coursers claims, that they care for wild life, have always been."
"In Ireland a large majority of the population are against hare coursing."

Aideen Yourel, ICABS Director
"We have heard that more than 300 people are travelling to attend the event. This is like a consolation prize for them losing the Waterloo Cup, but English coursers coming over here puts extra pressure on our hare population.
"Coursing has been suspended in Northern Ireland already because studies there have shown a shortage of hares."
"We want to signal our concern at people from England travelling over here for what is a type of cruelty tourism and the fact it now seems like open season for them to do so".

Matilda Mench, Animal 2000 Vice President
"A lot of German tourists go to Ireland and we feel that they should know what is happening over there."

United in music - Husband releases CD of his late wife animal rights heroine Vicki Moore
28/11/2005

To many, Vicki Moore was the world's most famous champion of animal rights, saving Blackie and other donkeys, bulls and goats from unspeakable deaths in many countries.

What comes as a surprise to most people is that Vicki was also an accomplished singer. She died in 2000 after a long struggle with the legacy of her injuries from being gored by a fighting bull whilst filming undercover in Spain. Now, five years after her death, her husband, who continues her work for the animals, releases a CD of her music.

In Madrid, in 1989, Vicki recorded a number of tracks for an album called "Animal Eyes", that was going to be released for the animals. Due to lack of marketing on the Spanish side, her recordings were never released.

During research for a book on her life her husband, Tony Moore, realised that he did not have a proper recording either of her singing voice or of the record itself.

In a painstaking search, since most of the people involved had died, he managed to track down the original recordings in Catalonia. With great care he had them digitalised and modernized.

Miraculously a homemade demo tape was also found. On it Tony accompanies Vicki on his guitar. It proved usable and he is proud to be united with her on the CD.

On the cover another member of the family features: Little Alita, a kitten who sought refuge in Vicki's handbag from being abused in a fiesta in Spain in 1988.

Tony, chairman of Vicki's charity "Fight Against Animal Cruelty in Europe" (FAACE) wants profits of the CD to go to the charity.

Tony Moore: "When we listened to the tape, we realized that this was something special. Vicki sacrificed her career for the animals. This record is a tribute to her and I believe that the four tracks we selected will do her artistic side justice. I hope that the CD highlights Vicki's story and will inspire others to take up a commitment for animals or people." Read here how to purchase

One down one to go - The Grand National
08/04/05

The Waterloo Cup and the Grand National were both started by the same man William Lynn in the late 1900s.

Now at long last the cruelty of the Waterloo Cup hare coursing has been put into the dustbin of history.

Now it is time to give serious thought to removing that other animal cruelty spectacle the Grand National.

In the UK we know that bullfighting is an extremely cruel event and in the bullrings of Spain approximately 200 horses are killed annually.

Yet on the racetracks of England around 200 horses are killed annually and we turn a blind eye to this.

If only a fraction of this number of jockeys were killed the National and with it all national hunt meetings would be stopped immediately.

When horses are injured they are killed, not only because they cannot be saved, but because their racing life is over and they are have no further value. It is better business to collect the insurance.

If only the general public would think about the consequences for the horses and the cruelty involved, perhaps they would think before having their annual "flutter" on thie National.

ST VALENTINES DAY - NO LOVE FOR THE HARES
Glenda Jackson MP and Actress, backs FAACE Campaign

09/02/05

A demonstration against the last Waterloo Cup at Altcar will take place on Monday the 14th of February 2005 - We meet on The Causeway, Altcar, at 10.00am to move off at 10.30am.

Last Chance for Legal Killing
The date for the Waterloo cup was originally booked for the 22nd of February but has been brought forward to get in one last lot of killing before the ban on hare coursing comes into effect on the 18th of February.

Feelings Running High
Feelings will be running high on both sides, the coursers annoyed that their 'sport' is being taken away from them, and the demonstrators that the Waterloo Cup hare killing is only taking place because of the 'juggling' of the dates.

FAACE has coordinated the demonstration against the hare coursing at the Waterloo Cup at Altcar since the late 1980s and is doing so this time.

Glenda Jackson MP, the famous actress, told FAACE in a phone message that she backs the campaign against the Waterloo Cup: "As always, I continue to support the campaign for an end to this barbaric practice". She pointed out that she has signed the Early Day Motion that; “This House is appalled by the decision of the National Coursing Club to bring the 2005 Waterloo Cup forward to 14th February, thus defying the clear will of the House of Commons and the people of the United Kingdom; condemns the arrogance and insensitivity of those responsible for this decision; and urges the media to broadcast the horror of this event thus demonstrating to the public why hare coursing has been banned.”

Colin Pickthall MP for West Lancashire says, "This Waterloo Cup will be the last hurrah of the most loathed of all blood sports. The people of West Lancashire will rejoice to see the end of it. The ban is the end of many years of campaigning by many dedicated people. It is sad there will be one more Waterloo Cup next week, but it will be a funeral not a celebration."

John Pugh, Southport MP says “Let’s hope this is the last time this disgusting piece of barbarism takes place in this area.”

Tony Moore:
“The gruesome Waterloo Cup has been brought forward to squeeze in one last go, on the killing fields at Altcar and it could be a recipe for disaster considering the high passions that are running on both sides.”
“It is an irony that the coursers have chosen St Valentine’s Day for their massacre of the hares.”
“We have already been contacted by a number of Animal Rights groups and it looks as
though it will be the biggest demo ever.”
“A number of outraged local people have already been in touch with us saying that they want to demonstrate against this cruel event.”

St Valentine's Day massacre for the Hares
26/11/04

The organising committee of The Waterloo Cup at Altcar Merseyside have brought forward the date of this contentious event to the 14th/15th/16th of February 2005, to squeeze in one last "three day killing event".

This might be seen as a 'Declaration of War' by some anti-hunt campaigners.

In an open letter to the organisers of the 'Waterloo Cup', Tony Moore Chairman of Fight Against Cruelty in Europe urged the coursers not to create a confrontation.

Tony Moore has asked them to consider the matter of public order if two groups of people with totally opposing views, the coursers on one side and the anti-coursing demonstrators on the other, meet for the last time on the killing fields at Altcar.

FAACE has already been contacted by a number of AR groups and it looks as though it will be the biggest demo ever. Not for just the one day as usual, but possibly for all three days.

The police have already said that their resources will be stretched to the limit.

FAACE has coordinated the demonstration against the hare coursing at the Waterloo Cup at Altcar since the late 1980s.

If the Waterloo Cup is brought forward to squeeze in one last go it would seem to be a recipe for disaster.

Feelings will be running high on both sides, the coursers annoyed that their 'sport' is being taken away from them and the anti's that it is only taking place by the 'juggling' of dates.

Appeal to Tony Blair - Save the poor little hares!
01/09/04

There is only a narrow window of opportunity left.

The beginning of September, before the conference recess on the 16th, would
seem to be the last chance to stop the horror of the Waterloo Cup.

A bill could be put through the House of Commons in one day. The House of
Lords could defeat it but as long as this defeat came at least 30 days
before the end of the parliamentary session, it could then be introduced via
the Parliament Act. It could then be forced through and become law. The
current session of parliament is expected to end in mid-November.

Because of this Tony Moore, Chairman of FAACE on the 25th August wrote the
following letter to Tony Blair:

"Dear Prime Minister,

I write as Chairman of Fight Against Animal Cruelty in Europe (FAACE). Since
1987 we have been working against the cruelty of hare coursing and in
particular the Waterloo Cup event, which takes place here on Merseyside.

Hare coursing at the Waterloo Cup consists of the releasing of two
greyhounds to chase a hare. According to our records one in four of the
hares are caught in the jaws of the dogs. Rarely, if ever, is the hare
killed outright. There is often a tug-of-war between two dogs with the hare
as the living rope. All this takes place in a virtual arena, in front of a
crowd who place bets on the outcome of the course.

This event can only happen because it takes place on privately owned land.
Both the Sefton Metropolitan Borough and West Lancashire District Councils
have banned the use of their facilities for promotion or anything to do with
hare coursing. There is an overwhelming majority of citizens in the area who
are appalled by this event, yet it still continues.

Before and since the election of the Labour party, you promised to bring in
a bill to deal with the hunting of animals with dogs. You have intimated in
two general elections that if the public voted for your party it would mean
the end of these cruel 'sports'. We are still waiting.

Perhaps I am being cynical, but it does seem that you are letting this bill
go to the wire as a tactical electioneering ploy. I must assure you that it
will not work again.

The Waterloo Cup is booked to take place on Tuesday the 22nd to the 24th of
February 2005 at Altcar, near Formby.

Our organisation has been instrumental in coordinating the demonstration
against this event for a number of years. Each year lately, the
demonstrators have been saying this will be the last time.

Please, for the sake of the animals, bring in the bill to stop this cruel
and bloody 'sport' from taking place.

Yours sincerely,
Tony Moore
Chairman, Fight Against Animal Cruelty in Europe"

Sky's the Limit!!
17/05/2004

Sky Television is selling the viewing of bullfighting live as part of it's Sky World Family Pack.

EU Law (see below)
EU law is being violated by the transmission of live bullfights in the UK at a time when children are able to watch. In the UK bullfight transmissions can be received in some cases from 16.30 hrs on and for up to three hours.

GORY
We have recorded footage of bullfights aired by Sky in the afternoon. They are very explicit and show the bullfight in all it's gory detail.

CODE OF ETHICS (see below)
Sky is also flouting it's own code of ethics.

CYNICAL
Sky TV in their Sky Sale on www.sky.com/skyplus even has a cartoon of a bull and a bullfighter sitting on a sofa watching TV. This is an obviously a cynical reference to the bullfighting and is an advertisement in very bad taste.

FAACE has written to Mr Rupert Murdock, Chairman of British Sky Broadcasting Group pointing out the fact that he is breaking EU law and asking him to remove this offensive programme from Sky TV.

FAACE sent a copy of this letter to The Rt Hon Tessa Jowell MP, Secretary of State for Culture Media and Sport.

COMPLAINT FILED
In October 2003, FAACE, Spanish animal rights group, Asociación Nacional para la Protección y el Bienestar de los Animales (ANPBA) and German animal rights groups Initiative Anti-Corrida (IAC) and animal 2ooo, filed a complaint with EU commissioner Reding about the breach of law by Spanish TV station TVEi.

QUESTION ASKED
On October the 22nd, Richard Corbett MEP asked a Parliamentary Question of the Commission concerning this subject. Amongst others, Caroline Lucas MEP and Jean Lambert MEP supported the campaign and German MEP Markus Ferber also wrote to the commission.

SHOCKED
We are shocked to find that now Sky TV is breaking EU law too!

Tony Moore, Chairman of FAACE:

"We have had a number of calls from distressed members of the public begging us to get this abomination removed from the air ways."

"Apart from the legal aspect of this, to sell this as part of a 'Family Pack' is nothing short of appalling."

"Children are mentally very vulnerable and the viewing of bullfighting, 'as it happens', could affect them in two ways, either they will be shocked and have it in their waking and sleeping minds or they will become desensitised to cruelty. To inflict either of these reactions on children is totally unacceptable"

"To add insult to injury, this morning's post brought an offer of 6 months' at half price for the Sky family Pack."

The EU Council Directive 89/552/EEC (amended on 30th July 1997) CHAPTER V, article 22:

1. Member States shall take appropriate measures to ensure that television broadcasts by broadcasters under their jurisdiction do not include any programmes which might seriously impair the physical, mental or moral development of minors, in particular programmes that involve pornography or gratuitous violence.

2. The measures provided for in paragraph 1 shall also extend to other programmes which are likely to impair the physical, mental or moral development of minors, except where it is ensured, by selecting the time of the broadcast or by any technical measure, that minors in the area of transmission will not normally hear or see such broadcasts.

Sky Code of Ethics:
To the best of their knowledge, and to the extent that they are reasonably able to do so, the Relevant Officers must, at all times:

· Ensure that the Company complies with applicable governmental laws, rules and regulations, both UK and foreign, as appropriate;

· Ensure that the Company complies with applicable private and public regulatory agencies rules and regulations as appropriate;"

Who are they fooling?
The Aintree race meeting starts on April fools day.

30/03/2004

The Aintree race meeting and the Grand National is promoted as a wonderful event. The horses are great athletes doing what they do best and all is well with the world. But since 1997, the three-day meet at Aintree has claimed the lives of 29 horses.

In the UK we know that bullfighting is an extremely cruel event and in the bullrings of Spain approximately 200 horses are killed annually.

Yet on the racetracks of England around 200 horses are killed annually and we turn a blind eye to this.

When horses are injured they are killed, not only because they cannot be saved, but because their racing life is over and they are have no further value. It is better business to collect the insurance.

Grand National ‘Disgrace’

The ‘Grand National’ should be renamed the ‘National Disgrace’

The Grand National, takes place on Saturday the 3rd of April 2004

1 horse died in 2003. Goguenard sustained a fatal injury from a fall. Only 14 horses from the 40 starters finished the race; nine pulled up, eight unseated their riders, eight fell and one horse refused.

2 horses died in the ‘National’ in 2002.

33 horses have been killed in the race since 1945.

In other countries cruel races such as the Grand National are not allowed. In Germany the Grand National was taken off television due to protests by the viewers. They found it too disturbing to watch.

Of course the cameras quickly leave the horse that is down. They don’t show the green sheets erected round the horse as it is shot.

Are we the nation of animal lovers we believe ourselves to be, or are we more brutalized in our view of the cruelty of horse racing than other countries?

We ask the public to think before they place bet on the National and not to have selective vision. It is their money that keeps the cruelty going.

Death in the rush hour leads to death in the afternoon
Benefit bullfights for victims of Madrid bomb attack slammed

28/03/04

Any catastrophe serves as a purpose to have an extra bullfight in Spain.

A bullfight is being organised for the victims on the 2nd of April in Valencia. On the 10th of April there will be another one in Calasparra (Murcia). Of course the management of the Madrid bullright does not want to miss out on this opportunity to promote itself and will have a benefitbullfight on the 17th of April. There are more to come...

Ticket prices are being reduced by 20%. That means there is little money left after the high-profile bullfighters like "El Juli" have deducted their expenses. And it clearly shows, that this is just a means for the dying industry to fill the ring again.

The bulls are being supplied by leading bull breeders.

The events will be broadcast live on Spanish television. However, the European Commission is currently investigating whether Spain is breaking Community law by transmitting bullfights at times when children are watching.

Fight Against Animal Cruelty in Europe (FAACE), the Madrid based Asociación Nacional para la Protección y el Bienestar de los Animales (ANPBA) and the German organisations INITIATIVE ANTI-CORRIDA and animal 2ooo are running a campaign to try and get this stopped.

They have all written to Spain's new president Zapatero and the President of
the Valencia region asking them to call off this disgusting event and raise
funds in other ways such as concerts or sporting events.

Tony Moore, Chairman, FAACE:

"To add the blood of the 6 innocent bulls to the 200 human victims is nothing short of obscene. There will also be at least 1 spare bull in case it is needed. These animals also have to be sacrificed on the altar of man's inhumanity, because the European decree 1047 states that no cattle can return to a farm but must be slaughtered."

"This is an example of the opportunism of the bullfighting industry to get publicity at any price."

"Spain should really have had enough of killing without adding to the death toll."

Hare Coursers to meet their Waterloo
Yet again! The horror of the Waterloo Cup, Altcar.

Demonstration Against Hare Coursing - Tuesday 24th February

We have said it before, but this year should be the last time we have to bear witness to the chasing and killing of these poor hares, by dogs being set upon them. We have it on good authority, from a source close to the Government, that the 'hunting with dogs' bill will be pushed through this term. In fact it could receive the Royal Assent before the end of November.

We expect a good turnout of marchers with people coming from all over the northwest. We also expect a number of local politicians to be walking with us. The marchers will meet on the New Causeway at 10.00 to move off at 10.30. on Tuesday 24th February 2004.

Tony Moore, Chairman, FAACE:
"This arena blood sport should have been thrown into the dustbin of history years ago.

"Bookmakers are a big part of the scene at the Waterloo Cup. It is obscene to gamble on the life of and death struggle of an animal.

"The British public was promised by the present government that they would rid us of this blot on our countryside. They used this promise to win votes in the last two elections. If they let us down now, they lose our votes next time.

"The MPs voted by an overwhelming 317 to 145 for an outright ban on hunting with dogs at the third reading of 'Hunting Bill' on the 10th of July. Why are we still waiting?"

John Pugh, Member of Parliament for Southport.
"The Waterloo Cup is a piece of barbarism that this area can do without. The annual bloodletting has no excuse and I look forward to the day when such senseless cruelty is stopped for once and for all."

Colin Pickthall, Member of Parliament for West Lancashire.
"I have campaigned for the end of hare coursing, (the most unpopular of the unpopular bloodsports) for 15 years. I am confident - despite all the setbacks - that the end is nigh for this nasty activity."

Silvertown Quays.

Steamy Water Babes and Husky Hunks delight the crowds in London's hot tourist spot.

Audiences are wowed by this unique attraction, with displays of spectacular underwater ballet and marine divers, showing the delights and dangers of deep sea diving in this mystical underwater world.

An animal rights dream? Unfortunately yes!

The sad reality

Instead of something that could be unique to London, the plans are to build an aquarium. However it is hyped up it will be just another aquarium that can be found in many large cities.

It will house a number of breeds of sharks and other fish.

Wild animals suffer greatly in captivity, both physically and psychologically. A captive environment can never provide all that a wild animal needs.

One weak defence of these aquariums is that they help in the conservation of species. However aquariums still take many of their animals from the wild, and as many animals in aquariums may not live long, there is a constant 'need' to replace them.

Not only does this cause stress to the individual animals, but many wild-caught animals also die during capture and transport. Pressures are also put on wild populations.

Tourists come to see attractions that epitomise the London such as: The tower of London, Big Ben and the Houses of Parliament, Buckingham palace and the changing of the guard, Madame Tussauds and the London Eye.

Why not get a new idea instead of an old one especially one that abuses sentient beings.

FAACE has asked people from all over the world to tell those responsible what they think about this proposed aquarium by visiting the website at www.faace.co.uk/silvertown.htm which FAACE has created this page to facilitate this worldwide protest.

Prince Harry don't do it again! Stay away from rodeos!

Tony Moore, chairman of FIGHT AGAINST ANIMAL CRUELTY in EUROPE strongly condemns Prince Harry's presence at a rodeo in Queensland, Australia on Saturday October the 4th, 2003.

Rodeo is extremely cruel to animals and not a simple folksey game. In rodeo domestic animals like horses and bulls are artificially made to behave like "wild" animals. Electroshocking devices and the so-called flankstrap (a tight belt around the lower abdomen just in front of the hind legs) are used to make the animals buck. Spurs are driven repeatedly in their necks and shoulders.

The animals frequently suffer serious injurys and have even had to be put down!

Tony Moore: "We urge the prince not to repeat this unthinking act. Instead of encouraging rodeo he should speak against it. We ask all British tourists to Australia, the USA and Canada not to go to see a rodeo."

FAACE has been campaigning against rodeo in the Olympic Wintergames in Salt Lake City in 2001. The animal rights group also campaigns against rodeo in Germany and bullfighting and blood fiestas in Spain.

Extensive video footage of rodeo cruelty is available at FAACE's headquarters in Southport.

Don't get involved in bullfighting, David!!!

On June 20, FAACE sent a letter to David and Victoria Beckham begging them not to be entrapped in the net of the bullfighting industry.

In Spain football stars are targeted for their high profile and are encouraged to be photographed in compromising situations to promote the bullfight. They would love to sponsor a star as high profile as David Beckham.

The bullfight 'mafia' will do anything to get support for what is a dying and corrupt industry fighting for it's survival, and every means to that end is, in their eyes, justified.

Bullfighting is no sport between two equal opponents. It is not a fair game like football. The result is known in advance. The animals enter the field well prepared, always to the advantage of the bullfighter. Manipulations on the bull range from drugging, to the cutting and reshaping of the bull's horns. There is no replay or return game. One of the players is dead!

The interest of the Spanish people in bullfighting has decreased considerably according to last year's Gallup poll.

Spain's most successful animal rights group Asociación Nacional para la Protección y el Bienestar de los Animales, who are based in Madrid, will confirm this, as well as the fact that the opposition to bullfighting is growing.

FAACE has been fighting against the cruelties of bullfighting and blood fiestas since 1987.

The 25th of June is the anniversary of the day that co-founder, Vicki Moore, was gored by a fighting bull in a village fiesta, in Spain in 1995. She died as a direct result of her injuries on the 6th of February 2000.

FAACE asked the Beckhams, "Please kick the ball, don't kick the poor bulls, and beware of the 'bull' from the bullfighters."
