An aquarium is planned to be built as part of
the regeneration of the Silvertown dockland area of East London.
It is to be the main attraction in a housing
and entertainment area.
The aquarium intends to display sharks and a
great many different varieties of fish.
Wild animals suffer greatly in captivity, both
physically and psychologically. A captive environment can never
provide all that a wild animal needs.
One defence of these aquariums is that they
help in the conservation of species.
Aquariums still take many of their animals from the wild, and
as many animals in aquariums may not live long, there is a constant
'need' to replace them. Not only does this cause stress to the
individual animals, but many wild-caught animals also die during
capture and transport. Pressures are also put on wild populations.
The plans are not yet approved and the Local
Planning Authority has granted no planning consent. But a detailed
plan of the aquarium is intended to be submitted in the late
spring.
It is not too late to stop this aquarium
but we need to act now!
The big argument for the aquarium is that it
will be a tourist attraction bringing in 1 million visitors
annually. It is up to us to prove that this assumption is misguided.

En Londres, un proyecto de regeneración
se está llevando a cabo en la zona portuaria de Silvertown,
al este de la ciudad. Los planes comprenden la construcción
de un acuario, que constituirá la atracción principal

Le projet de régénération
de Silvertown, un quartier des Docklands à l'est de Londres

des poissons.

Ceux qui essayent de justifier la construction
de l'aquarium prétendent qu'il aiderait la conservation
des espèces marines. Cependant, les aquariums toujours
prennent une bonne partie de leurs poissons de la mer, et en
raison de la courte vie de ces derniers dans l'aquarium, il
existe un "besoin" constant de les remplaçer.
Ceci provoque une grande détresse chez les poissons individuels,
ainsi qu'aux populations sauvages. En effet, bon nombre des
poissons meurent pendant la capture ou pendant le transport
à l'aquarium.
Le projet n'a pas toujours été
approuvé, et le Service de l'urbanisme n'a pas donné

Ce n'est pas trop tard pour empêcher
que ce aquarium soit construit, mais nous devons agir maintenant

| Ein großes Aquarium soll
im Rahmen der Wiederbelebung des Silvertown Dockland Gebietes
im Londoner Osten gebaut werden. Es soll die Hauptattraktion eines
Wohn- und Entertainment-Gebietes werden.
Das Aquarium wird Haie und eine Vielzahl anderer
Fischarten zeigen.
Wilde Tiere leiden stark in Gefangenschaft,
sowohl physisch als auch psychisch. Ein beschränkter Lebensraum
kann niemals alles bieten, was die Tiere benötigen.
Eines der von den Befürwortern des Aquariums
vorgebrachten Argumente ist, dass damit der Artenschutz unterstützt
wird. Viele Aquarien beziehen Wildfänge. Da viele der Tiere
in Aquarien nicht lange leben, müssen sie immer wieder
ersetzt werden. Das bedeutet Stress für das jeweilige Tier
und viele Wildfänge sterben bereits beim Fang oder während
des Transportes. Auch auf die Wildpopulationen wird Druck ausgeübt.
Die Pläne sind derzeit noch nicht genehmigt.
Aber im Frühjahr wird ein detaillierter Bauplan des Aquariums
vorgelegt werden.
Es ist noch nicht zu spät, das Aquarium
zu verhindern, aber wir müssen jetzt handeln!
Ein weiteres Argument für das Aquarium
ist, dass es als Touristenattraktion eine Million Besucher jährlich
anziehen soll. Es liegt an uns zu beweisen, dass diese Annahme
falsch ist.

Aquariums are an outdated concept and before
long will be completely defunct. Why don't you think of a novel
idea that does not harm innocent creatures? Why not, if you
want to have a large area of water, an aquarium of people? They
could do underwater displays of balletic swimming and perform
stunts etc.
You say that an aquarium will be a tourist attraction.
Well I can assure you that for a great many people it will have
the opposite affect. In fact if this project goes ahead I will
never visit London and will do my best to deter others.
I can assure you that there are millions of
us around the world of like mind.
